The story started in the late 60s when gas prices were cheap, $0.31 a gallon. The claim was that the auto industry invented a carburetor which made it possible for a vehicle to get 50 miles per gallon. Or was it 60? No, it was 100 mpg. Anyway, Big Oil made a deal with Big Auto to lock the carburetor away in a vault under Detroit never to be used so that Big Oil could sell more gas for big profits. Yeah, who would believe such a fanciful tale of a magical technology that would solve Americans energy problem? Well, apparently President Barack Obama.
Since taking office, Obama has expanded programs enacted by Congress in 2005 to search for alternative energy technology to replace fossil fuels, for which he has a professed hatred. While his EPA destroys legitimate profitable industries that do not require government subsidies like coal companies, he uses the Energy Department to loan money to green companies which the GAO determined were unlikely to have the ability to repay.
In an April 29, 2015 post entitled, “Obama’s Green Loan Program Dumps $2.2 Billion on Taxpayers”, the National Center for Policy Analysis’ website summarizes the ineptitude of the Obama Administration. “From the beginning, the investigators said because companies knew more about their projects and their own creditworthiness, they had an advantage over the Energy Department. The GAO said the companies were more likely to accept a federal loan guarantee if the Obama administration underestimated the actual risk of a project, leaving taxpayers on the hook.”
History will no doubt document Obama as the most incompetent manager of the country’s resources and recklessly indifferent to the cost to taxpayers of his failed policies. However, he so believes in the fairy tale of a miraculous solution to America’s energy needs that he throws billions at any snake oil salesman who floats through Washington with the latest green energy pipedream. What he does not understand is the power of the free market and the incentive of personal profit in the development of technologies which improve people’s lives.
Apple, Microsoft, Facebook, Ford, Exxon, name the company and it was founded by people not out to serve mankind or even create jobs but entrepreneurs seeking to profit from their efforts. If anyone were to invent a miracle carburetor, they would make a small fortune just as the developer of a cheaper alternative to fossil fuels would become wealthy beyond their dreams. The motivation of a free society is that creativity produces personal profit.
Once, Russia produced so much wheat it exported it then the Communist Revolution arrived. During the height of the Cold War, the Soviet Union had to import wheat to feed its citizens. The difference was the introduction of collective farming by the Communist Party. In the paradise of the perfect society of the U.S.S.R., workers had no personal incentive to meet production quotas; the results of their labors were taken from them to serve the state. Soviet Russia had the misfortune of being led by Lenin who was a great believer. The result was government induced famine where millions of people suffered and died. Lenin’s communism fail, it has failed wherever it has been tried.
V.I. Lenin and B.H. Obama share a common trait, the belief in big government rather than a free society with limited government.
Every con man knows the secret to a good con is a mark that truly believes. In Barack Obama, the alternative energy con men not only have a believer but one with a trillion dollar check book filled with other people’s money. And they promise him a 100 mpg carburetor – no, wait, a 200 mpg carburetor.
